793 Additional COVID-19 Positive Cases Recorded in Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe’s health authorities provided their weekly update on the evolution of the virus in the country.

For the week of September 5 to 11, 2020, 793 new cases were recorded which brings the number of cumulative cases of coronavirus confirmed by PCR tests in Guadeloupe to 3,080. The authorities reported that the circulation of the virus remains very active in Guadeloupe, although the number of new cases is down significantly compared to last week. A total of 837 people are cured.

The health authorities further state that over the period, 3,722 additional tests were carried out thanks to campaigns in municipalities, laboratories and hospitals, with a total number of 36,764 tests carried out.

Since their last bulletin, a death of a 37-year-old woman at the CHBT was recorded with co-morbidities. This death brings the total number of deaths linked to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic to 24.

The number of people admitted to hospital is increasing and with it the number of severe cases among populations with co-morbidities including young patients. To date, there are 20 people hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the CHUG.

The latest clusters identified in Guadeloupe indicate that the transmission of the virus does not occur exclusively in public places, but very often also in the private sphere (family events) and also in the professional sphere (at workplaces) reported the authorities.  Among the clusters identified, one is identified at the gerontological hospital within a hospital care unit for people with Alzheimer’s.
